Where to stay in La Fortuna
Choose downtown, the hot-springs road, volcano-side lodges or rural stays by mobility and activity plan.

Short answer
Start with the trip, not the postcard
Stay downtown for walkability and easy tour pickups, on the hot-springs road for a resort-led thermal stay, near El Castillo or the park for nature immersion, or farther out only when transport and meals are solved.

Report a map issueLet the evening routine decide the address
Downtown can simplify meals and services, the hot-springs corridor makes the property's facilities a bigger part of the holiday, and El Castillo or a rural lodge can favour a quieter nature-led routine. None is automatically the right base for every activity. Locate the entrance, ask where pickups happen and establish the return after dinner. A volcano-view room category and thermal access are specific booking details, not promises attached to an area name. Confirm what is included before comparing headline room prices.
Plan the hours between the outings
Put your most important activity on the page first, then leave room for breakfast, collection, return and recovery. The address should make those ordinary hours workable. Downtown may fit meals outside the property; a thermal-area stay may fit more time on site. These are different routines, not simply different distances from a volcano pin.
Avoid scheduling another paid outing tightly after an uncertain return. Check collection points, what happens if weather changes the programme, and whether the activity suits every traveller. Suggested pacing is our editorial advice. We do not certify operators, physical suitability or the availability of any departure.
Ask the lodging questions the destination name cannot answer
Request the entrance, the dining arrangements and the exact facilities included in the room rate. For thermal facilities, distinguish access as a guest from a separately booked visit; for a rural address, establish how meals and evening transport work. The name La Fortuna alone does not tell you which services are within reach.
An Arenal-area property is not a park entrance. Confirm permitted trails and access with SINAC, not with a hotel photograph or an old promotional article. Do not treat Cerro Chato or the volcanic cone as standard accessible hikes. Keep a fallback day centred on services and activities that are actually confirmed for your stay.
A reason to linger
Let the season shape your stay
Choose the trip first, then match the address to the event. A recurring festival is not a confirmed programme for your dates.
Next programme not confirmed
San José · Festival de la Luz
December · recurring window, edition date to be confirmed
ICT lists a recurring San José festival. Its yearless calendar does not confirm a 2026 parade date.
If the parade is part of your trip, give San José its own overnight stop. It is not an evening activity based in La Fortuna, Guanacaste or Manuel Antonio; plan the next transfer separately.

Next programme not confirmed
Palmares · Fiestas
January · next programme to be confirmed
ICT's recurring calendar is context, not confirmation of a particular January edition.
Palmares is a separate Central Valley stop, not a La Fortuna neighbourhood. If it earns a place in the itinerary, confirm the actual programme and a dedicated return before fitting it between nature stays.

Before you commit
- Verify the edition, venue and admission terms with the organiser before booking non-refundable travel.
- Compare the exact room, cancellation terms and the return journey after the event.
- Leave the arrival or transfer day free of an essential event; a festival listing is not a transport guarantee.
Decision rules
Use these to break a tie
- Choose town versus resort first.
- Then map the three most important activities.
- A low room rate can be erased by repeated taxis.
Before you book
Three checks
- Confirm pickup coverage for the exact hotel.
- Check SINAC's currently permitted sectors, trails and payment rules; do not assume crater access from a tour description.
- Check road, rain and late-arrival conditions.
Useful questions
What travellers usually need to know
Is downtown the best first-time base?
It is the most straightforward operational shortlist without a car; resort travellers may prefer the hot-springs corridor.
Can I walk from town to Arenal National Park?
No. The official park entrance is outside town and needs transport.

Useful official planning links
Check your dates and journeys with official destination and operator resources. These comparisons are editorial guidance, not hotel inspections, live availability or a safety guarantee.
- Visit Costa Rica: La Fortuna and the Northern Plains
Explore the regional destination context. For permitted Arenal or Chato access, use SINAC's rules rather than promotional descriptions of volcano activities.
- SINAC: Arenal Volcano National Park (in Spanish)
Read SINAC's published visitor rules, which prohibit climbing the volcanic cone and its immediate surroundings. Check permitted sectors and conditions again for your visit; nearby lodging does not grant trail or crater access.
